Environmental Issues Ad

Updated: Nov 2, 2024

My high school photography class focused not only on how to use a camera and approach a subject, but also on building our comfort with Photoshop and teaching us some of the basics of some of the applications of photography in the professional world. One of our assignments was to create a pair of advertisements regarding a randomly allocated environmental issue - one for and the other against. I had "water pollution," and spent quite a while dumping coffee grinds, chocolate syrup, and various other ingredients into a casserole dish filled with water to simulate different pollutants - I even had some tiny plastic bottles to drive the point home. The "con" ad is perhaps a bit basic, serves the purpose but nothing especially unexpected, the "pro" ad required a bit more creativity. I'm not sure exactly how I arrived at my idea, but I suppose it's a thought experiment of finding a way that a negative effect (killing ocean life) can be sold as a benefit (decreasing the possibility of shark attacks). I hope it is obviously satirical if someone comes across the image in my gallery, but I think it still makes more sense in context, and the framing of the assignment deserves credit for pushing me to think outside the box, which is why I'm laying out the full story here.
